The translational cellular and molecular neuroscience group at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research currently have two PhD scholarships available, which would be funded at the current APA rate. (around 20500AUD /yr)
The group is interested in mechanisms of neurodegeneration and in particular the interrelationships of neurons with other cell types in the nervous system including astrocytes and macrophages. The projects available include
(1) The analysis and manipulation of the key events that occur in the retina after microhaemorrhage in an animal model of macular degeneration and
(2) examining and manipulating the expression of unusually spliced glutamate transporters in the brains of animals after hypoxic/ischaemic insults.
